It's Official!! Niklaus is being listed as available for adoption!! - He didn't even stay on the list for a week before he found a home!

Below is the original blog entry I created when it was decided that Niklaus was ready for adoption. It only took 1 short week for him to find a furever home! He was lucky many dogs never make it out  of shelters to rescues or furever homes! If you are interested in saving a life check out your local shelters and rescues for available dogs of all breeds!

After about 30 days of trying to put weight on, observe his overall health improvement and trying to help him relax in a positive environment Niklaus is being list as available for adoption this week through the National Brittany Rescue https://nbran.org/!!!!  If you are interested in giving this boy or any other Brittany we have available a furever home please go to the site and complete an application for adoption!  He cannot wait to find his new companion/s in a new furever home!
Hi, everybody I’m Niklaus!  I’m a handsome 47lbs orange/white ten years young Brittany Spaniel!!  If you want a companion let’s talk as I love to get your attention and be with my pack members. I am learning to cuddle and often snuggle in my foster mom’s bed with her and her cat but I also spend some nights on the dog bed or in the guest room.   I’ve been told by reliable sources that I am smart and learn quickly.  I’m housetrained, I know basic commands such as sit, no, down, and my foster mom and I are working on stay and up.
I’m a friendly fella and get along with people big and small.  I also play well w/ other dogs that I know or meet of all ages and sizes.  My foster home has two cats and I’m friends with them.  I also love playing in the water and getting baths, sometimes I sneak in the tub if I think I need a bath!  If you have to run errands take me w/ you as car rides are fun and you can take me somewhere to walk me, as walks are exciting!  If you have toys I might play w/ them but really prefer to play w/ my new family and friends.

Well, thanks for reading my biography, I hope to meet my new family soon.  I want nothing more than to live in a home that will keep me and love me unconditionally and appreciate my zest for life!  If you are that family or person, please fill out an adoption application. I can’t wait to meet you and be the companion you have always wanted!

Niklaus Update 9/1 - apx 1 1/2 months since rescued

I am happy to say as the last week comes to an end, Niklaus has taken a few more baby steps in his journey to health and improvement! I am hoping this will help him find a furever home where he can spend the rest of his days in love and nurturing!

Niklaus has managed to add a little bit more weight to himself thanks to scrambled eggs for breakfast, peanut butter sandwich for morning snack, dry kibble and milk for lunch, and ground deer meat, beef broth and dry kibble for dinner! I am pretty sure the scambled eggs are his favorite meal though!

Niklaus skin and coat are gaining their shine back thanks to his improved diet and the amount of time he spends in the bath....this week alone he has had 2 baths and spends time every day in the wading pool in the back yard.  The other day I heard noises coming from the bathroom and walked in to find Niklaus just standing in the tub.......

Niklaus has quickly made friends with my cat Nemesis

and he has quickly made himself at home, finding the guest room for those times when he just needs some "me" time!

Update on Niklaus - 20 days

Niklaus is improving every day!  He will probably be on the adoption list https://nbran.org/affiliates.asp by the time this post. If not he will be available soon. If interested in giving this wonderful old man (10 -12 years old approximated by 2 vet exams) a furever home just go the The National Brittany Rescue site and complete an adoption application! He will make a wonderful companion animal to a good furever partner!

For those of you following Niklaus' journey you will remember that when he first came to me on Aug. 6, 2016 he was severely underweight, appeared to be severely dehydrated, had hearing loss, vision loss, balance issues, suspected arthritis, muscle atrophy in one hind leg, was nervous, had separation anxiety, and overall was just not a confident canine. These are all the reasons I decided to foster him and help him heal so he would have better luck finding a furever home! I had lost my own companion, NaKoda
, about a month previously

In just a short 20 days, Niklaus has finally seemed to re hydrate himself and has gone from drinking multiple gallons of water each day to drinking a normal amount daily. With the rehydration his hearing appears to have improved. If I speak in a raised voice he pays attention. He knows the commands No, sit, and come. We are working on lay down, shake, and no bark. (he seems to like to bark at every strange noise in the neighborhood, cars, and people who do not belong to our pack. Niklaus has learned to use a system of bells hanging from the back door knob to let me know when he wants out although from time to time he still stands at the door and barks but any improvement is awesome!

Nicklaus has visited several of my friends homes who also have dogs (1 4 yr old female bull dog - Lizzie, 1 apx 4 month old female boxer puppy - Lola, 1 old male chihuahua - Tony, & 1 8 yr old female great dane - Sookie).  He seems to do well with all of them however he wasn't greatly impressed with the great dane ....perhaps because she towered over him. He showed no signs of fear or aggression with any of them and while he was not greatly social with them he showed no issues with any of them.

Niklaus is also good with cats. He's a little curious about them but not to the point they mind him or run from him.

Niklaus even has managed to gain a few lbs in the 20 days he has been with us causing us to have to let the harness out a notch yesterday!

Niklaus' personality has yet to truly show itself but for now he seems to be affectionate, obedient and wants to be with his pack members all the time......especially the human one. He shows separation anxiety and doesn't like the human pack member out of his site for very long.  We plan to work on this though by building up the lengths of time we leave him home with the feline pack members or by himself.

Niklaus does well on the leash for walks but prefers to be off leash however as of right now he isn't trusted to stay with his human off leash. He likes to wander and check everything out.  We will try to build up to that but if not being on a leash when outside of his yard is not a bad thing.

He loves to go for rides and doesn't show any signs of aggression or fear towards anything we have encountered so far, including children which he seems to love!

Remember Niklaus is in need of a furever home! He will be a great constant companion to someone who needs some company and will love him unconditionally! Follow his journey and help us find him a furever home!

Update on Niklaus

Niklaus seems to be doing much better! I get excited every time I see some improvement in him! I can't wait for someone out there in need of a companion to find him and give him his furever home!

I think most of his hearing has returned!

 His balance is better!
He gets along with the neighbors puppy we visit every day!

His vision seems better (no more bumping into things)!! He doesn't limp so much any more..mostly just in the morning and only on the leg that has the muscle atrophy but that appears better too!!

He is learning to sit on command,

he knows No, he knows come, He answers to his name!

He'll prolly be on the available for adoption list in the next few weeks so if you know anyone interested in him send them to https://nbran.org/affiliates.asp     to complete and adoption application!
